Soil Stabilization (SS)

Les Carrières de St-Dominique

Strengthen Your Foundations
for the Long Term

Serving both Quebec and Ontario, Les Carrières de St-Dominique offers soil stabilization solutions. These solutions reuse your existing soils to reinforce your foundations, reduce costs, and make the most of on-site materials.

Les Carrières de St-Dominique

What Is Soil Stabilization?

  • Method
  • Reuse of natural soils and/or existing foundations
  • Treatment
  • Analysis, formulation, and testing
  • Partnership with design firms to validate targeted properties
  • 2 types : Pulverizer mixing (pulvo) or Pugmill mixers (portable plants)
  • Addition of cement (and/or lime), mixing, reprofiling and compaction
  • Surface protection (wearing course (crushed stone, RCC, asphalt, etc.))

  • Applications
  • Stabilization of natural soils to minimize structural thickness
  • Increase in load-bearing capacity of existing foundations (2 to 6 times)
  • Remediation of contaminated soils to avoid off-site disposal

  • Projects
  • Roadways on remote job sites with limited resources
  • Temporary access roads for heavy work (traffic, lifting)
  • Municipal road stabilization
  • Foundation improvement for heavy vehicle traffic areas
  • Port facility road construction

Frequently Asked Questions
About Soil Stabilization

  • How Is Soil Stabilization Different From Traditional Foundation Replacement?

Rather than excavating and replacing the existing materials, soil stabilization reuses your natural soil or existing foundation. A binder (cement and/or lime) is mixed directly into the soil, which is then mixed, re-profiled and compacted.

This approach eliminates the costs of excavation, transportation, and material disposal, while significantly reducing construction time.

  • What Types of Soils and Projects Are Suitable for Stabilization?

Soil stabilization is suitable for a wide variety of contexts: municipal roadways with insufficient bearing capacity, temporary access roads for heavy construction, traffic areas for heavy vehicles, remote construction sites, and port infrastructure.

It is also applicable to contaminated soils, allowing for their on-site reuse rather than costly disposal.

  • How Does a Soil Stabilization Project Unfold?

Each project begins with an analysis, formulation, and testing phase in partnership with a design firm to validate the targeted mechanical properties. The treatment is then carried out through mixing: either using pulverizers (pulvo) on-site or Pugmill mixers in a portable plant.

Once the soil has been treated, re-profiled, and compacted, a surface course (gravel, BCR, paving, etc.) is applied to protect the surface.

  • Can Soil Stabilization Be Used for Contaminated Soils?

Yes. Stabilization allows certain contaminated soils to be reclaimed directly on-site, thereby avoiding the costs and constraints associated with their transport and disposal at an authorized site.

This approach is part of a responsible materials management strategy and can result in cost savings depending on the volume and type of contamination. Les Carrières de St-Dominique works in partnership with design firms to ensure that the targeted properties are achieved safely.
