Quarry Visit by Fifth-Grade Students from École de la Rocade

Each year, the Citizens Dialogue Committee invites the fifth-grade students from École de la Rocade to visit the quarry

Two groups of fifth graders from École de la Rocade visited the St. Dominique quarries. The students were accompanied by their teachers, the school principal and a parent from the super school park committee. They were welcomed by Marcel Beauregard of the Citizens Dialogue Committee, Michel Coolidge, town councillor and member of the Citizens Dialogue Committee and by officials of Les Carrières de Saint-Dominique Ltd. During the two-hour tour, the students were able to learn about the company, its activities and their importance to the industrial sector in Saint-Dominique.

The visit, which was an initiative of the Citizens Dialogue Committee of Les Carrières de Saint-Dominique Ltd., was also an opportunity for the students to witness the implosion of a mine of more than 47,000 tonnes of stone and take a tour of all the quarry operations before finally arriving at Citizens Park where they planted a fruit tree. This symbolic gesture reflects the interests of the company and of young people alike towards environmental values. The students left the quarry with a gift bag containing a rock, a cap and information about the quarry’s history.

In its second year, this visit was once again met with great enthusiasm not only by the students and principals of École de la Rocade but equally by the managers of Les Carrières de Saint-Dominique Ltd.

Congratulations on this great success!

Contest – Name the Mascot!

A competition was launched for the 5th graders’ visit. They were invited to give their suggestions to name the quarry’s Health and Safety mascot. The name chosen by the Citizens Dialogue Committee was Bob Sécur, which was proposed by Étienne Rioux. On June 22, just days before the end of classes, Étienne received a bike as his prize for winning the contest.

Congratulations Étienne!

Open House Day (2011)

Open House Day Organized by the Citizens Dialogue Committee and the OHS Committee

Les Carrières de Saint-Dominique Ltd. would like to thank the visitors who attended Open House Day held annually. This day would not have been possible without the help of the members of the Citizens Dialogue and OHS Committees, who worked very hard to organize this very successful event.

There were also a great number of employees at Les Carrières de Saint-Dominique Ltd. who got involved to ensure the safety of visitors.

Once again this year, we had many visitors. In fact, no less than 11 buses criss-crossed the quarry to enable visitors to learn more about the nature of our activities at Les Carrières de Saint-Dominique.

Overall, nearly 500 people attended Open House Day 2011. Visitors came from Saint-Dominique and Saint-Hyacinthe and were either area residents, relatives and friends of the employees or others from outside the area.

Following the site visit, many people told us how astonished they were to see the grandiose beauty of our surroundings. The company is very proud to open its doors annually to raise awareness and demystify its activities.

Thank you to all those who were involved in making this day a success.

See you next year!

Annual Open House Day

An open house day for the quarries in Saint-Dominique organized by Citizens Dialogue and OHS Committees

Another big success!

Les Carrières de St-Dominique would like to thank the people who attended Open House Day held on September 22. This day would not have been possible without the help of the members of the Citizens Committee, who made a significant contribution to the organization of this great day. In addition, the OHS committee members and employees of Les Carrières de St-Dominique worked hard to ensure visitors’ safety and to serve as operators for loaders and off-highway trucks and as guides in the buses.

Again this year, visitors came in large numbers. In fact, no less than 16 buses toured the quarry roads to allow everyone to understand the nature of the activities taking place here. There was a total of about 800 people who attended the event: young families and relatives and friends of employees mainly from the St-Dominique and St-Hyacinthe regions.

We would like to mention that we received $1,285 from the truck and loader tours.

We provided visitors with more than 1,000 hot dogs with drinks, chips and apples. We would like to say a big thank you to Verger Le St-Francois de St-Pie orchards for donating the apples.

At least $135.20 was collected in tips.

The Desjardins Caisse contributed a $250 donation.

La journée portes ouvertes

This made a total of $1,670.20, which will be donated to a municipal charity.

Les Carrières de St-Dominique is very proud to have allowed citizens of St-Dominique and other people from around Quebec to visit the site. Now people will no longer see the quarries the same way…

Thanks to everyone!

See you next year!
